Q: Dual fuel and electric towel rail options. What are these and how do they work?

 1 Feb 2005

A: Dual fuel and electric towel rails have been available for some years now, and whilst they have been a functional addition to towel rails, it is only recently that new designs have made them not only affordable, but extremely versatile. Your towel rail will be retro fitted to accommodate an electric element which has an integral thermostat to regulate heat output. On dual fuel models, these will operate when the central heating is switched off offering heat into the towel rail. With electric models, the element will be the sole source of heat. As far as heat outputs are concerned, general rule of thumb is to divide the heat output by 2 to estimate the element size. Electric and dual fuel outputs are listed in most of the downloadable technical data PDF files on the site. These can be found to the right of the product listing.

It is possible to regulate the heat output by fitting an equally rated dimmer switch between the fused spur and the towel rail, although due to regulations, this will need to be outside the bathroom. If you are considering this, we suggest you contact a qualified installer to discuss your requirements.
