Q: How large should a towel rail be to heat my bathroom?

 1 Feb 2005

A: There are many factors to be applied when selecting a towel rail. We will try to break these down to give you some idea of your best options.

Towel rails or heated towel warmers as they are also known have a twofold job in the bathroom. Many people want something to hang their towels on for drying, others want a room heater. The one thing all people want is something attractive for their bathroom which is going to look stylish and elegant but will not take up too much room in an already cramped environment. Considering these factors, we suggest you contact your heating installer and establish the required heat output for the room. The outputs on our site are in watts. If you require the output in BTU's, simply multiply the watts by 3.412.

Now comes the tricky part. You need a towel rail to heat a space but at the same time the towel rail needs to warm and dry towels. Your towels will effectively insulate heat from your towel rail. When asked this question, we usually advise to opt for the largest towel rail you can comfortably fit into your bathroom. Should you be concerned that the output will be too high, you can ask your installer to fit a thermostatic valve (TRV) so that you can control the output. These are available from BathroomStuff as a special order.

Another option is to look at the top rack models offered in the contemporary range. These offer you the ability to store fresh towels at the top of the towel rail and keep the lower rungs free to provide heat into the room. Top rack towel rails can be made in traditional styles as a special order, call the sales office on 023 9221 5633 to discuss your requirements.

Alternatively, you may want to opt for a towel rail with a lower heat output. This may be due to your particular space requirements or the style you prefer. Do bear in mind that whilst in the bathroom, for the most part there is a shower or bath or basin running. All these produce heat into the room and will affect the room temperature.
